There is a phrase that has quietly taken over AI product discourse: “your AI assistant.” It frames the relationship clearly — there is a task, there is a tool, and there is you directing it. The AI assists. You remain the principal.
This framing is not wrong. But it is incomplete. And the incompleteness matters more than most people realize.
The task as the wrong unit of design
When you design an AI system around task completion, you optimize for a narrow outcome: the task gets done. This sounds unambiguously good. But consider what gets left out.
A task, in isolation, carries no information about the human performing it. It does not encode their goals, their cognitive style, their relationship to the domain, or the broader context in which the task occurs. A system designed purely for task completion may complete the task while degrading the human’s understanding, confidence, or autonomy in the process.
The question is not whether the task gets done. It is what kind of human-AI system emerges from the interaction.
This is a design question, not a performance question. And it requires a different unit of analysis.
Cooperation as a structural principle
When we say cooperation is a design principle, we mean something specific. We mean that the system — both the human and the AI component together — should be designed so that:

Human agency is preserved at every decision point. The human should understand what is happening and why, with enough clarity to disagree, redirect, or override without friction.

Cognitive load is shared, not transferred. The goal is not to move thinking from the human to the machine, but to distribute it in ways that produce better outcomes for both.

The relationship is legible. What the AI knows, what it is uncertain about, and what it is optimizing for should be visible to the human partner — not as a technical readout, but as natural, interpretable behavior.

The system improves through interaction. A genuine collaborator learns the patterns, preferences, and goals of the person it works with. This requires memory, adaptation, and a model of the human — not just the task.
Why the framing matters
Framing shapes what gets measured, what gets funded, and what gets built. If we frame AI as a task-completion tool, we build systems that are very good at completing tasks. These systems will often be impressive and genuinely useful.
But they will not be designed for human flourishing. They will be designed for human productivity — which is related, but not the same.
The difference shows up at the edges: in how the system handles ambiguity, in whether it encourages or atrophies human skill, in how it responds when the human is uncertain or wrong. A task-completion framing has no good answers to these questions. A cooperation framing puts them at the center.
